Topic: The relationship between Saul and David

Define older child syndrome: the pressure the oldest sibling feels to meet the high expectations placed on them as well as the stress to feel like they must be the perfect role model for the rest of their siblings,

Define younger child syndrome: refers to the idea that the youngest child in a family possesses certain personality traits or receives specific treatment due to their birth order.

So what are 3 emotions Saul is feeling about the situation David put him in?

Tip: Read 1 Samuel 18:6-16:https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Samuel%2018%3A6-16&version=NIV

  • Paranoia, paranoid that he will lose his throne and his power.

  • Jealousy, Jealous of David success

  • Hopelessness, the lack of hope in oneself when faced against what Saul see’s as God’s chosen

How do these 3 emotions compare to what God looks for in a leader?

Jealousy vs Humility

Hopelessness vs Bravery(courage)

Paranoia vs Faithfulness

So Saul is feeling all these negative emotions and tries to kill David multiple times. But then David catches Saul unguarded and cuts his clothes1Samuel 248 Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. 9 He said to Saul, “Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you’? 10 This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 11 See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life. 12 May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. 13 As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you.

14 “Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea? 15 May the Lord be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.”

What are 3 emotions David felt right before he approached Saul?

What prevented David from killing Saul?

  • David was able to respect Saul because he trusted God’s plan, God’s Timing, and God’s anointing of Saul

  • David was able to have patience with a man whom attempted to take his life

  • David was able to keep his integrity by sparing Saul’s life

Discussion Question

When is a time you have felt jealousy in your own lives? How did you handle feeling jealous? End with: I am enough, just as I am. In embracing my worth and letting go of comparison, I find joy in the present. Remembering my own impermanence humbles me, and I honor my humanity by valuing every moment and every soul.
